Your phone number is a surprisingly good identifier. It's often tied to your messaging-app profile picture, to caller-ID databases that know your name, and to social accounts that let people "find you by phone number". On dating apps — where you're talking to strangers — that's worth thinking about.
1. Verify the app with a separate number
The dating app needs a number that receives its SMS. It doesn't need your personal one. A one-time non-VoIP number keeps your real number out of yet another company's database — and out of any future data breach.
2. Turn off contact syncing
Some apps offer to find or hide contacts. Hiding contacts means uploading your address book. Decide whether that trade is worth it.
3. Keep chats in the app at first
In-app chat can be reported and moderated. Move to another channel only when you're comfortable.
4. Use a second-line number for matches
When you're ready to text, a second-line app gives matches a number that isn't yours. See burner apps vs one-time numbers for how the two fit together.
5. Check what your number reveals
Save your own number in a friend's phone and look at what shows up in your messaging apps. Adjust profile-photo visibility to "contacts only".
6. Remove your number from social search
Most social networks let you turn off "find me by phone number". Do it.
7. Add a non-SMS login
Whatever number you verify with, add email or Apple/Google sign-in to your dating accounts. You'll never be locked out by a lost SIM.
